century, the work of Sir Francis Galton begun the frenzy of research into this perplexing subject (1996). It continued with Alfred Binet at the start of the twentieth century
and while tremendous strides have been made in this area, a universally recognizable understanding of intelligence has never been accomplished (1996). The reason is because of the success of
intelligence testing, intelligence has been defined as what the tests can measure (1996). There is a large problem with this, problems demonstrated by the intense debates that had been sparked
by the publishing of The Bell Curve, a work that alleged IQ could be correlated with race. Not only was the sentiment not politically correct, it pointed to a major
problem with IQ testing. That is, nurture plays a significant part in the testing process. In other words, many of these tests were designed with a particular race in mind,
designed by those of a particular race and because these tests were equated with obtained knowledge one can say with little argument that the IQ tests do not measure intelligence
exactly. Still, despite the fact that there are problems with these standardized tests, it is true that the tests measure something. Shobris (1996) in fact says these tests are measuring
something reliable. For example, IQ scores do successfully predict the number of years one will be in school, their degree of academic success and so forth (1996). Thus, whatever the
component of the IQ that the intelligence tests measure, it can certainly help in answering the fundamental questions that crop up in the nature/nurture debate. The idea that intelligence is
