Social work is often integrally involved with the elderly. There are many facets of the aged individuals life where social
work can have a positive impact. The aging process, after all, is affected by a diversity of factors. This process isnt limited to physiological changes but is also
impacted by emotional, cognitive and social factors. Even seemingly inconsequential factors can be incredibly influential in this process. Location, for example, is an important determinant in the aging
process. So too is ethnic or racial identity, gender, sexual orientation and economic status. One of the prominent approaches in social work that takes into consideration each of
these factors is the generalist model. The social worker applies the generalist model always with the deepest respect for
the elderly client. Values under the generalist model fall in line with the social work code of ethics. The integrity of the profession as a whole is always
held in high esteem and this determines what is appropriate behavior for the social worker and what is inappropriate behavior. Ethics should govern every aspect of the way social
work agencies function. The primary task of the social work agency is ethically and effectively addressing social problems. That task can, however, be difficult and complex.
