All of these preconceived notions are discussed in this paper with the emphasis being on gender bias in the McCarthy Era. MCCARTHYISM, THE HOLLYWOOD TEN AND GENDER BIAS McCarthyism and Hollywood blacklisting represent an appalling display of civil rights as well as gender bias. With racial issues still boiling over in the 1950s and the ongoing fight for equality for women appearing to gain little ground, McCarthys Hollywood Ten brought to light an entirely different prejudice - one that hit the hearts of virtually every American. How was it possible for these men to experience such injustice when social progress was supposed to be taking place? Clearly, the notion of civil rights for all Americans carried little weight when it came to potentially damaging - yet unproven - political issues. "Were these frightened reactions in any way justified?" (Patterson 106). Historic theorists would have had much to say on the subject. For example, philosopher John Rawls contention of justice states that if a particular institution imparts its own definition of equity that does not equate with the masses, then that institution must either be abolished or reformed. Indeed, the authors egalitarian argument is based upon the fact that justice, in and of itself, is the sole factor that supports social institutions; however, the concept of justice must be the same across the board in order for it to be properly implemented, a notion that did not apply to McCarthyism.
