--properly! Most all cultures have some conception of the family unit, the biological and social unit through which people join together,
raise children, and work to support a household. However, from one culture to the next, the experience of work within the family unit might indeed differ dramatically. This is especially
true when one looks at gender roles within the family, and the expectations associated with work inside and outside the home. Interestingly, even as cultures differ in their overall expectations
for the distribution of labor, the foisting of household labor onto women remains the same across cultures, whether supported by ideology or not. This paper will use interviews of two
culturally diverse families in order to explore the differences in the experience of work by men and women across cultural boundaries. The two families interviewed for the purposes of this
paper are the Andersons, an American family, and the Lees, a Chinese family that only recently immigrated to America. Each of the two families is composed of a father, a
mother, and a child; the Andersons have one son, John, and the Lees have one daughter, Sandy. In the course of a given day, all three of the Andersons
preoccupy themselves somewhat with work. Mr. Anderson works full-time at a construction company from 8AM to 5PM, after which he returns home and has mostly free time. Mrs. Anderson works
her own full-time job at a secretary at the local high school from 8AM to 3PM, and after leaving work, she routinely has another five hours of chores and cleaning
