potential benefits for humankind. Some contend that this research has been severely curtailed, however, by our governments current stance on the issues. It is the government, after all,
that provides much of the funding for such research exploits. In reality, despite the current limitations on the types of cells that can be used in the research, the
government is still the most important funding mechanism for stem cell research. Never-the-less, the thesis can be presented that:
our governments current stance on stem cell research is, in fact, restricting knowledge that will ultimately be of great benefit to all concerned. The
red tape and fiscal restrictions that currently bind stem cell research are deeply concerning. Despite
the many positive applications of fetal research, strong public interest groups have formed over the years which are ready to pounce into action on any issue regarding human reproduction or
life (Mulkay 37). In 1994 the National Institute of Health proposed that carefully designed research involving human embryos should be allowed (Benowitz). They even proposed that in some
cases it should be acceptable to create embryos for the express purpose of research (Benowitz). By 1995, however, the U.S. House of Representatives had proposed the complete banning of
all National Institute of Health embryonic research involving humans (Appel). President George W. Bushs firm stand that only existing lines of stem cells be used in research has done
