is a far cry from altering its seeds and creating new plants. While there are doubts about safety, new advances have enabled farmers to do just that. One has to
admit that, in exploring the mysteries of life, such creations are rather amazing. The potential of using genetic materials to alter life is truly significant, but with the positive aspects
of genetic engineering, comes responsibilities. What does the practice mean for future generations? While it seems that the use of bioengineering has been helpful in creating better crops,
many of the strides made are far from essential. While that is obvious, what is not so obvious is that the future may depend on bioengineering. People take the food
supply for granted, knowing that farmers will always be there through thick and thin, through disastrous droughts and economic turmoil where even Kansass Dorothy would lose her farm. But there
is no guarantee that the plants one takes for granted today will be available ten, twenty or thirty years down the road. After all, no one foresaw the eruption of
AIDS and with pests and viruses attacking life on Earth, it is possible that the farming situation can take a turn for the worse. If someday there were no fresh
apples or pears available for consumption, and no corn or green beans, that would be somewhat problematic. Few think about plant breeding in the future. Yet, it is an important
issue. Plant breeding progress in the future will depend upon the efficient use of genetic resources. While there are many critics who suggest that altering plants genetically is not
safe, the other side may very well be that doing nothing is not safe either. The future of plant breeding depends on doing something now, while food is plentiful. Turner
