encompasses a wide gamut of approaches to health care. The term "alternative" refers to those alternative approaches to health care that fall outside the care provided by licensed medical
doctors and the mainstream medical establishments within which they work. In the past this has included such alternative practices as massage, herbalism, and acupuncture as well as more esoteric
approaches such as Mind-Body Healing. Concentrating on those alternative approaches that have a proven track record in terms of affecting improved health and welfare, Complimentary Alternative Medicine seeks an integration
of mainstream medical care and the so-called alternative approaches to care (AARP, 2005). The future of CAM, however, is uncertain. While there is a definitive need for such
an approach to healthcare, many within mainstream medicine have serious objections. One of the most common objections is that CAM is typically devised and administered outside of the strict

latter two categories are included among those approaches that are specifically utilized to improve health, the percentage of Americans relying on CAM jumps to sixty-two percent (Allen, 2005)! These
statistics demonstrate that we have not moved that far beyond the traditional folk remedies that aided us through the early part of our countrys history.
