they pertained to the African American community. It was also a show that simply entertained people, regardless of race or culture. In one of the earlier episodes, from the second
season in 1985, there was a plot line that introduced the artist Ellis Wilson and one of his paintings, The Funeral Procession. The following paper examines the television show, its
importance, and the painting and artist. The Funeral Procession by Wilson and The Cosby Show The Cosby Show was one of many comedy situations on television that presented
the audience with an African American family. What made this particular show very different from all others was that the family was relatively well off by anyones standards. The father
was a doctor and the mother was a lawyer and they were considerably stable and well educated. This presented the nation with a very different African American family; that being
one that was successful and educated. But, there are often many arguments concerning whether or not The Cosby Show did good from a social perspective in the nation. One author
notes, for example, how the show "criticized in some quarters for depicting a nonrepresentative upper-middle-class family" while there was still a very powerful sense of racism and oppression for much
of the African American community in the nation (The Professor). From the opposite perspective another author, in quoting ones comments on the show, notes, "Michael Eric Dyson lauds Cosby for
shattering narrow conceptions of African-American identity and culture" (Neal). Whatever the case, it was clearly a very powerful show that changed the way many people saw African Americans, and also
a show that illustrated how there were many African Americans in the nation who were educated and successful. As such it was the first of its kind and important. It
