or her societal function. Before that, however, we might want to consider what public relations is. In order to remain profitable, enhance its reputation and even continue to exist, an
organization needs to have the support and continued loyalty of its employees and customers (Public relations specialists, 2006). It is the job of the public relations specialists to "serve as
advocates for businesses, nonprofit associations, universities, hospitals, and other organizations, and build and maintain positive relationships with the public" (Public relations specialists, 2006). Public relations specialists interact with the media,
members of the community, the government and industry; they work on political campaigns and with special interest groups; they are conflict mediators and they have input into "employee and investor
relations" (Public relations specialists, 2006). However, good PR people are not just "spin doctors" who are employed to spout the company or party line; they must "understand the attitudes and
concerns of community, consumer, employee, and public interest groups"; furthermore, they have to establish and maintain good, solid relationships with these groups and with members of the media, both broadcast
journalism and print (Public relations specialists, 2006). The duties of PR personnel include drafting press releases and getting these releases into the proper media outlets: "Many radio or television special
reports, newspaper stories, and magazine articles start at the desks of public relations specialists" (Public relations specialists, 2006). The subjects of these press releases vary widely, from the employment policies
of an organization and its role in the community to public health issues, environmental reports, or other matters of public concern (Public relations specialists, 2006). In private industry, PR specialists
