manage departments in large organizations and there are even managers in public service. Management is something necessary for organizations to function. Yet, when exploring the role of the manager, it
becomes rather complex. What are the key job functions of the manager? According to Phillips (2002), there are four specific functions or categories of management. The four primary functions of
the manager are planning, organizing, motivating and controlling (Phillips, 2002). Yet, there is something that enhances these four functions. The things which affect the functions are communications and creativity
(Phillips, 2002). As each function is explored, the way that creativity and communications are involved will become apparent. First, planning is something that is important in any corporate environment.
In order to get things done, a plan has to be initiated. Planning can take many forms and a variety of methods may be employed. Cleary, creativity can become involved
in this function in order to enhance production, and communications are necessary when planning involves many people or departments. For example, in planning a marketing campaign, many people will have
to be contacted and the communication function will be initiated in different forms such as email, telephone, written memorandums, messenger and so forth. Many managers today make use of planning
software and technological items such as blackberries in order to be well organized during the planning process. The term "organized" is mentioned, and organization is in fact a large part
of the management function. Organizing will depend upon what needs to be done at any given moment and people may be given particular jobs as a part of the organization
