The French Revolution had a reverberating effect not just on France but on the world. State relations changed dramatically during this time.
This was particularly the case, of course, for the relations between France, the United States, Great Britain, and Spain. When the French thrashed out to unleash the bonds
of what had been an absolute monarchy and seize democracy, however, although most Americans cheered them on the fledgling United States country tried to stay neutral. Neutrality was not
something that was passively granted during this chaotic point in history, however, and the French Revolution impacted states both near and far.
American neutrality during the French Revolution is, to some, perplexing given the degree of aid the French offered the US in her own revolution from Great Britain. The
French Revolution, in fact, was patterned after the American Revolution. The French, however, had their own reasons for aiding the Americans in the revolution that preceded their own by
over a decade. The French had been forcibly removed from North America by the British in 1763 and they were vehement over that fact. In 1776, when the
Americans bravely proclaimed their independence from Great Britain, the French saw their opportunity to get the British back. The sent both men and supplies to fuel the American Revolution.
