and scholars have attempted to describe and understand. In short, there are numerous texts covering various aspects of the importance and events of the French Revolution. Two works are "The
Coming of the French Revolution" by George Lefebvre and "Social Interpretation of the French Revolution" by Alfred Cobban. From the titles alone we can see that the two books cover
slightly different aspects of the French Revolution. For Lefebvres work the study is clearly on the "coming" of the Revolution. We can assume that his work is detailing the events
that led to the French Revolution rather than a text that discusses the events of the Revolution itself. And, from the title of Cobbans work we can assume he is
discussing the social significance of the revolution rather than the political and government involvement. With these assumptions in mind the following paper examines the thesis of the authors, how their
works are organized, what prejudices they may have in relationship to their study of the French Revolution, the conclusions they come to, and the value of their historical interpretation as
it pertains to the study of the French Revolution. Thesis When we first examine Lefebvres work we begin to see that the focus of his text is on
the political and social upheaval involved in the coming of the French Revolution. He primarily focuses on the political struggles within the monarchy of France, with some mention of the
social aspects as they involve the people. And, it seems to be more than merely a work that examines the facts as it explains how the author sees the need
and existence of revolution. It is a very narrow study, in all honesty, and his thesis seems to be a philosophical one wherein he claims that mankind does not always
