A 5 page overview of the French Revolution. The author contends that this revolution had its roots deeply imbedded in France's history. The problems leading up to the revolution, in fact, can be traced some one-hundred years to a point preceding it, to a point even before the reign of Louis XIV the grandfather of Louis XVI. This revolution was replete with much bloodshed and can not be characterized as a "glorious" revolution such as that experienced in England in the previous century. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

France had, in fact, already experienced many changes even prior to the outbreak of the Revolution. King Louis XVI had held the throne for some fifteen years. The country had persevered in the face of its defeat by the British and the 1763 Treaty of Paris. It had even lended a hand to the young United States in the achievement of that countrys independence. France had also been immersed in difficult economic times, however, and was facing many internal threats. These threats had, in fact, been long in the making. Indeed, the French Revolution could be contended to have roots back some one-hundred years in history to the reign of Louis XIV. The fact that the French Revolution took some one-hundred years to erupt can be substantiated with a number of observations. Louis XIV was one of the worlds most influential and powerful leaders during the latter part of the seventeenth century and the first part of the eighteenth century. Officially, he held Frances throne from the young age of five to his death, (1643 to 1715). His mother, however, made the actual decisions regarding the country until her death, a death at which time Louis was twenty-three years of age. Louis XIV inherited a kingdom which was deeply scarred economically, emotionally, politically, and socially. Never-the-less, his reign would prove the power of an absolute monarchy. His policies would extend not only to France itself but would, in fact, shape the face of Europe as a whole in regard to geographic distribution, international affairs, and in particular the political alliances which ...
