1787, the French Revolution quickly developed into an unstoppable torrent which culminated with the establishment of a Republic in September 1792 and the execution of the king and queen in 1793. How does one account for this phenomenon? Indeed, there were a number of variables that helped to motivate what has come to be known as the Reign of Terror: the influence of the enlightenment, the role of class conflict and the role of counter revolutionary forces. b) Source of Conflict Georges Jacques Danton had great significance in the French Revolutions Committee of Public Safety. His outstanding leadership afforded him the opportunity to lead his followers and influence opponents. Closely linked with this era was the Reign of Terror, which served to arbitrarily execute those who were considered to be the opponent. This discretionary manner by which the executions were carried out was what would be the main bone of contention during the entire period. With Dantons Committee of Public Safety as the overseer, people were often killed without benefit of a fair trial, routinely accused and charged with being "enemies of the regime" (Anderson 260). This point was rarely, if ever, proven, however, that was not the concern of the committee, who sought to rid their society of all whom even appeared to be an enemy. The original mission of the committee was to "prop up" (Anderson 260) its authority, which it achieved to the utmost despite the constant opposition it received. It was the unfairness with which people were randomly chosen to die that unsettled many a citizen. The Reign of Terror was brutal and widespread, with Danton at the forefront.
