into hands that did not really understand how to deal with the remains of such a powerful, and different, empire. With the fall of the Roman Empire came the empowerment,
and bewilderment, of the Franks. The following paper examines this historical time. The Franks As the Roman Empire fell the Franks, Germanic tribes, ultimately became the powers of
the lost empire. What seemed to remain, more powerfully, than anything else was the institution of Christianity. In reality, they had not really intended to ultimately and completely destroy Roman
power but that is essentially what took place and as such the Franks were in a position where they needed to lay foundations. As one author notes, "The Germanic tribes,
who participated in the sacking of Rome at the formal end of that empire, did not destroy the Roman Catholic Church alongside with the Roman state, partly as a result
of them viewing the religion of Rome as being part of the great original cultural tradition of that Empire - which it was not" (Kemp, 2006). In essence, the Franks
had no concept or comprehension of what it took to control and direct such a huge empire and as such retained only that which they felt was perhaps the foundation
of the empire; Christianity. In light of this it appears as though the Franks worked towards a relationship with the papal power as well as a relationship with kingship,
another reality they were not necessarily prepared for nor in a position to truly comprehend in the same way as the Romans had. As an example of the extent to
