play that examines the power and complexity of friendship, as well as a play that examines the ability and inability of humans to truly be happy for another person. The
following paper examines the theme of this particular play, with a focus on how the theme is that friendships are complex. The Four of Us by Itamar Moses
This play involves two men who have obviously known each other for many years. They were children at camp together and then were young men together, visiting one another here
and there but never it seems really having a very deep relationship as one would have through living near one another or with one another. One could well say that
they are really nothing more than fleeting friends and that their friendship has never been tested. But, then again, one could argue that their friendship is very illustrative of the
traditional friendship that men have with one another. Most of the time it is women who have deep relationships and men who have more shallow and basic friendships. As such
this particular play could be arguably a play about a deep male relationship (as this portrays as deep a friendship as most men have) and the complexity of that depth.
Whatever the case, the complexity of the friendship is the theme of the play. It involves two men who have become, at least, somewhat successful in their writing careers.
Ben is the more successful of the two, having published his novel and receiving millions for his work. David is a playwright and his first play was not incredibly successful
but it was produced, which indicates some level of success. And he is working on a second play that has promise (presumably this play, The Four of Us). In
