books: Joshua, Judges, Samuel, and Kings. The Latter Prophets includes four prophetic works: the books of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and the Twelve (Minor) Prophets. There are three terms that designate
a prophet: roeh, hozeh and nabi. The earliest is roeh, which means seer. Later, the term was changed to nabi, or prophet. The Hebrew word for prophet is nabi, the
plural is nebhiim or nebiim (Larue). The time period identified for the Former Prophets was around the 8th century and lasted until about the 5th century, B.C. Hebrew prophecy
was founded in the prophetic activities of different individuals and groups. The Hebrew perception of prophecy was centered on forthtelling, or proclaiming. It did include some predictions of the future,
however. Hebrew prophets were acutely conscious of the absolute holiness of God as well as of His purpose for His chosen people. They also were aware of the effects of
sin on both man and the society. As a result, they took a radical ethical outlook that they applied to both individuals and to the community, as a whole (Thomas
1). Nabi means to name or to proclaim, therefore the prophet was a spokesperson, an individual who calls out. Specifically, the prophet is supposed to convey Gods messages.
It is not clear whether the prophets all received their messages from God through dreams, visions or in other ways. Some prophets were also referred to as "a
man of God." Samuel was such a person. He was reportedly a clairvoyant, a seer. He also performed as a priest and was active in Hebrew politics. Eli, a priest,
trained Samuel to perform as a priest. Ezekiel, the prophet, also had priestly interests. There is evidence that suggests that at least some prophets belonged to some sort of
