development of the industry at the present time. The shoe industry incorporates various types of product, including hand made leather goods and traditional footwear
as well as more modern items, in which India is able to compete successfully with footwear producers in other areas of the world. There
is also a gradually increasing sports shoe industry, with companies such as Reebok beginning to invest in Indian manufacture. After considerable success in other Asian countries, Reebok set up its
first centre of operations in India in 1994 (Fischer 1995.) In terms of more traditional styles of footwear, the centre for the Indian leather
tanning industry, which is in Tamil Nadu, is rapidly becoming transformed into the heart of designer footwear in Indian leather. The Shoe Design and Development Centre of the Central Leather
Research Institute and the Central Footwear Training Institute of India are playing a leading role in the expansion and improvement of the leather industry.
They have been instrumental in increasing production and sales of leather accessories and have played a major role in reinventing the industry. It has now been taken out of
the constraints of caste barriers within which it was formerly confined and is expanding across cultural and social parameters. The CFTI has been particularly
successful in improving the production capacity in those small communities traditionally involved in shoe manufacture and has played a large part in assisting such communities to ameliorate their capabilities in
