film a bit distasteful it is a story that clearly offers up to the viewer characters that are vivid and stereotypical in an ancient manner. The two most obvious, in
this respect, are the characters of Ted and Healy. Ted is a fool and Healy is a trickster. The following paper discusses the film from the perspective of the fool
and the trickster. The Fool and the Trickster: Something About Mary In first looking at the film it is important to establish the traits that make for the
fool and the trickster. The fool is a character who ultimately entertains the audience. But, at the same time they are very complex characters as well. "The fool gets to
tell the truth, the hard truths that might cause trouble if anyone else tells them. The fool can get away with telling the hardest truths just because he is a
fool" (Myth and Image, 2010). Clearly the audience laughs when the fool speaks because the audience does not take the fool seriously. But, by the end of a play or
a film or a story the fool has demonstrated some truth, proving he is a deeper character than a simple fool. The
fool has a wondrous capability of truly providing many different elements of human nature to the audience. They can be ridiculous and yet speak volumes about important issues such as
injustice or the evil nature of others. The fool can look and act in a very non-serious manner and thus the audience is willing to get the message, unknowingly in
many cases. He has power in his foolish nature. "The fool provides truth, balance, play, recreation, destruction, creation, change. The fool is the destroyer of our well-ordered world and
