Madagascar were hit in the winter of 2000. Food, medicine and blankets were provided to more than 700,000 victims of this massive flood which occurred near the Indian Ocean
island of Madagascar ("U.S. Helicopters," 2000). Flooding had killed 130 people at the time already (2000). While aid workers distributed the goods to flood victim, France sent helicopters to assist
("World," 2000). Although only 130 people had been killed by the floods up until that point, reportedly as many as 700,000 were affected by the severe storm and were
in need of help (2000). What had happened in this February of 2000 to create such havoc? February is often a time when weather changes. However, this flood situation in
Madagascar was frightening. And Cyclone Gloria was to blame, a weather system that caused flooding in Madagascar and dumped weeks of rain on flood-ravaged Mozambique; this frightening storm left up
to one million people homeless or without any source of income ("World," 2000). The destruction to property was also huge, as one can imagine with such a large storm. On
March 10th it was reported that water was still stagnant on rooftops ("U.S. aid reaches," 2000). Trees were still down and dead animals were found in the waters (2000). It
was a disheartening scene. It was in fact two cyclones which ripped through Madagascar in ten days time that would be so difficult for this poor country
to handle ("Madagascar," 2000). The floods battered the huge island, and were horrid; yet, they were not as devastating as those that had saturated Mozambique during the same weather cycle
