situation is that it could have all been prevented. The river had been a problem for years, but by 2008, everything came to a head and the town experienced the
worst weather problems in most of the residents long memories. CNN reported in September of 2008 that the river reached record highs and actually did break the levees ("Little Calumet
River flooding"). The incident began with heavy winds and then the floods (Slife). There was also an explosion and then a fire, two incidents that were followed by a flood
of mosquitoes (Slife). It all started on August 4, 2008 when ninety mile per hour winds would go through the area and leave a number of power outages and
fallen trees (Slife). About one month after that incident, in September of that year, two storms would move through (Slife). Part of Hurricane Ike was a factor related to the
storms that would come in (Slife). When all is said and done, the Little Calumet River would flood about 15% of the town (Slife). One home that was standing in
water simply exploded, a situation that would cause fire to be spread to two other flooded homes (Slife). A failure to react right after the incident perhaps caused such events,
but the tasks seemed overwhelming at the time. Many people simply abandoned their homes in order to survive. Eventually, residents would return to their homes that they had to
evaluate everything when they found a great deal of wreckage (Slife). One story to come from the incident is as follows: "Arpad and Beverly Macik have lived in their home
on the bank of the Little Calumet since 1968. They studied their pile of discarded belongings on the side of the street and bit their lips to hold back tears.
