whole, has had tremendous influence on the history of the world. In many respects, in fact, fleas are among the most interesting examples of the Animal Kingdom. Fleas
are ectoparasites that live on the bodies of other creature. They parasitize everything from mice to man and in doing so they are not just an irritating nuisance but
often pass on disease that can change the destiny of entire civilizations. Entomologists, those who study insects, maintain that insects are
the most dominant life form on earth. They have the greatest number of species not only of any other phylogenetic order, but they outnumber in species all other animal
and plant species combined. Scientists estimate that there are several million insect species. Of these there are only 900,000 species which have collected and scientifically described so that
they can actually be recorded as separate species. Although extremely diverse in form, taxonomically all insects belong phylogenetically to the class Insecta and the phylum Arthropoda.
The flea is a member of the Insect Phylum and the Order Siphonaptera, a term that translates interestingly enough to mean "wingless siphon" (Kettle, 1995).
The flea is a highly specialized creature and subsists by sucking the blood from its hosts. They do so through specially adapted mouthparts that saw and suck their
way through their hosts skin. The flea is indeed an example of the wonders of evolution, the wonders of being able to adapt complex yet very efficient mechanisms for
dealing with the forces around it. Since time began the first creatures on this earth were faced on a daily basis with the need to survive and to procreate.
