A case study submitted by a student suggests that Keebler has been using elf labor during the past fifty years. The student writes: " Keebler is able to churn out mass amounts of cookies, cakes, and other yummy treats because the company is using forced elf labor. A recent movement has developed in protest, demanding that the company set the elves free. Keebler representatives claim that their company is not involved in any abusive labor practices and argues for its right to use forced elf labor." While humorous, this case study provides a model that is applicable to business ethics as well as to moral thought in a general sense. One may recognize such a scenario in contemporary society as some countries still allow slave labor. Some theorists claim that prison labor is tantamount to slave labor. In any event, it is prudent to examine the case in the context of moral philosophy as opposed to ordinary law. How might a Utilitarian view the situation? Would using forced elf labor be immoral according to the utilitarian model? How might Kantian ethics enter the picture? Utilitarianism is one alternative in deriving a moral theory when considering a variety of philosophical models. Above all, it is simplistic. And, it does not purport to create impossible scenarios where there is no logical position in every case. When it comes to utilitarianism, the greatest good is all that matters. As applied to the elf scenario, the greater good is served. Good cookies are made at the expense of the elves.
