article with a title alluding to the idea that there may be more than two sexes is quite disconcerting. In fact, it appears almost ridiculous at first glance. How
can gender be ambiguous? After all, when a baby is born, the doctor either shouts "Its a boy" or "Its a girl." Of course, things do not always go as
planned. The author notes that there is such a thing as "the intersexual body" (Fausto-Sterling, 1993, p.21). The notion of a body that is neither male or female is
troubling to those who are throwing baby showers and want to know the gender in advance, or to the parents of a little ballerina or a boy who wants to
be a fireman. Gender is woven into the fabric of society. Without prescribed notions of gender, things change. Pink and blue infant clothing and d?cor lose meaning. Society is at
least to some extent based on symbolic meanings. Yet, the truth is that gender is not as clear cut as people may think, which is why there is sometimes gender
confusion in myriad ways. Boys grow up and feel as if there has been some mistake because they gravitate towards dresses and speak softly. And while gender is rather confusing
and may be entrenched in a variety of things from social influences to genes, Fausto-Sterling (1993) does in fact focus on the idea that gender is something that is scientifically
problematic. The confusion regarding sexual organs at birth is at 4% (Fausto-Sterling, 1993, p.21). In other words, when babies are born, there are only 96% with clearly defined sexual organs.
