simple scenario about one who catches a fish. But, as the poem progresses the reader begins to see things differently, changing perspectives just as the narrator does. In the following
paper we analyze "The Fish" discussing the symbolism in the poem that creates a shift in perspective and emotion. The Fish As mentioned, the poem is simple enough
in that it is a poem about catching a fish. In the beginning we see the narrator thrilled with the prospect of this fish that has been caught: "I caught
a tremendous fish/ and held him beside the boat/ half out of water, with my hook/ fast in a corner of its mouth" (Bishop 1-4). In this we see the
simple scenario of catching a fish, and we see the excitement that the narrator has when we notice that it is a tremendous fish, likely a fish that anyone would
be proud to catch. We get our first glimpse of life, and death in the following two lines; "He didnt fight./ He hadnt fought at all" (Bishop 5-6). This
provides us with the image of a large and perhaps very old and tired fish. It offers us a symbol of acceptance and the perhaps an understanding of fate, on
the part of the fish. We are further offered an understanding that the fish is old in the next lines: "He hung a grunting weight,/ battered and venerable/ and homely.
Here and there/ his brown skin hung in strips/ like ancient wallpaper,/ and its pattern of darker brown/ was like wallpaper:/ shapes like full-blown roses/ stained and lost through age"
(Bishop 7-15). From here the narrator further details physical aspect of the fish, almost as though she were looking at it for the last time, the time that would
