war between the west and Iraq, many commentators have argued that had he been dealt with in the first war in the early 1990s, rather than being left in power
the war in 2003 many of the crimes he is being tried for now, which took place between the two wars, may have been avoided and the war itself may
have been avoided (Zwier and Weltig, 2004). However, when the first war between Iraq and the west took place the situation was very different and the reasons for going
to war as well as the set objectives and mandates were very different, it is only with hindsight that these arguments can be made credibility. The war which took
place in the Gulf between the west and Iraq has been referred to as the First Gulf War, or Gulf War I, but this can be confusing as there are
also references to the war between Iraq and Iran which took place between 1980 and 1988. In this paper we will refer to it as the First Gulf War (Zwier
and Weltig, 2004). It is also known as the First Persian Gulf War. In Kuwait it is referred to as Harb Tahrir al-Kuwait which translates as The War
of Kuwait Liberation, and in Iraq it is referred to as Um Maarak which translates as the Mother of All Battles (Zwier and Weltig, 2004).
