the nature of humanity and society. It tells the story of one mans failure to be what he wanted to be, and the impact that failure has on his family. It is a story that tells the viewer how the American Dream of material success is not what should drive people in their lives, for the character of Willy Loman is ultimately destroyed by his ignorant belief of this dream. Another critic states that, "Miller dexterously employs a structure, many themes, and different motifs that Miller used to make this play a classic" (Moahmed ). It is, in all honesty, a play that is quite complex, yet simple and homey at the same time. The following paper examines the opening page of this particular play. It should be understood that the opening pages of the play are actually set and scene descriptions and no dialogue enters into the play until the end of the second page of this play. As such the essay will actually examine the first two pages that set the scene of the entire play. The Opening The first line tells us of the music being played, flute music, that should invite visions of grass and trees on the horizon. And then the curtain lifts and we are inside Lomans house. We read that as the light changes we are forced to see how this house looks somewhat pathetic in the busy world of apartments. And, as the text states, "An air of the dream clings to the place, a dream rising out of reality" (Miller 11). Such a simple yet powerful introduction clearly leads the reader to feel a sense of sympathy, if not pity and sorrow, for the people they will meet.
