United States, Canada had an indigenous population before the first Europeans arrived. This paper speculates on the First Nations and the Colonists, asks us to put ourselves in that
time, and decide what three 21st Century things we would miss most. Discussion The first arrival of Europeans in Canada occurred in approximately 1000, with the arrival of Leif
Ericson and the Vikings, who "briefly established a colony in Vinland" but failed to gain a lasting foothold (Pre-confederation history of Canada, 2005). Fishing fleets "from all of the
Atlantic nations came to the Grand Banks off the coast of Newfoundland in the 15th century to take advantage of one of the worlds richest fisheries" (Pre-confederation history of Canada,
2005). Some of the ships, including those from Spain, Portugal and southern France, carried large supplies of salt and could preserve their catch on board; but the ships from
England and northern France had no salt, and therefore "had to land at Newfoundland or Nova Scotia and hang their catch to dry in the sun. These sporadic landfalls soon
led to permanent settlements [on] ...the southern coast of Newfoundland and the eastern coast of Nova Scotia (Pre-confederation history of Canada, 2005). It was inevitable that this settlement would
lead to meetings between the First Nations and the new colonists. Contact between the Europeans and First Nations, as might be expected, was disastrous for the tribes (Pre-confederation history of
Canada, 2005). Although the French befriended the Hurons, they were soon engaged in warfare against the Iroquois; to add to the injury, the British armed the Iroquois in an
