so, due to the great technological advances made possible through the Industrial Revolution. The world was seeing incredible new discoveries and inventions and the development of weapons and forms of
transportation were in the midst of all these discoveries. Through such things as the railroad, ironclads, and various forms of weaponry, as well as the telegraph and even balloons, the
face of war was changed forever and the Civil War was termed the first modern war. The following paper examines the railroad, new weaponry, and ironclads (along with other developments)
and then examines how all these things, and more, affected battles during the Civil War. Railroads As can be imagined, the railroads played a vital role in the
Civil War. Although the railroads were only about 10 years old at the beginning of the Civil War, their value was quickly understood for both sides of the war. The
railroads could transport soldiers and goods, and railroad stations or tracks could serve as places where ambushes could occur and destruction of such places to keep goods and soldiers from
traveling. Clark (2001) states that both sides "needed the cooperation of their railroads in order to fight a war governed by logistics and mobility" (26). Clark (2001) also indicates that
because the railroad was so relatively new, there was a great deal of chaos in trying to coordinate such efforts. The man power was not really skilled with railroads and
the potential for the railroads, though imagined, were not clearly understood or well organized. Throughout his work he illustrates how some plans were successful, like the Norths transporting of troops
for the battle of Chattanooga, and the failures of the South. However, throughout it all we see that the railroad truly came into use and the modern war had truly
