In the article titled "The First Human Cloned Embryo" published
in the January 2002 edition of "Scientific American" authors Jose B. Cibelli, Robert P. Lanza, Michael D. West, and Carol Ezzell recount their accomplishment cloning the first human embryo.
The popular perception of cloning, accomplished in this case using the process of nuclear transplantation, most often entails the enticement of a cell to divide on its own for the
purpose of creating a human embryo which can then be implanted in a womans uterus where it would mature into a human baby. In this case, however, the researchers
were targeting a much earlier stage of development, that of a blastocyst. They insist, in fact, that reproductive cloning such as that described above is too risky for both
mother and fetus and they support the restriction on cloning which has recently been imposed. The researchers intent in this endeavor was to harvest the stem cells from the
blastocyst, stem cells which ultimately could be used in the treatment of patients with a variety of diseases. The authors of this article contend that they believe their achievements:
"represent the dawn of a new age in medicine by demonstrating that the goal of
therapeutic cloning is within reach" (Cibelli, Lanza, West, and Ezzell, 2002). Indeed, this achievement has
