Early childhood is a crucial point in a childs development of self-discipline inasmuch as it represents the period between infancy and middle childhood where a significant amount of cognitive and emotional growth takes place (Montessori Center, 2009). The capacity to embrace certain concepts improves with great strides as they are bound and determined to figure things out for themselves. Montessori notes how this leads into the need for a greater understanding of their world, an objective that serves to encourage the child to probe and scrutinize everything around her as she steadily gains a better understanding of herself, her limitations and how to overcome what stands in her way. One way in which this developmental process is best realized is that of martial arts (Columbus et al, 1998). While a black belt shows others you have mastered the physical aspect of karate, it actually means much more in the way of personal growth. Karate is a combination of physical and mental control; a student who only practices the movements without also learning the specific leadership qualities fails to embrace the self-discipline mindset inherent to martial arts.
