variety of jobs during that time, always on an hourly basis and always in a position well under that which I am entering now. The job waiting for me
is assistant supply chain manager for a Fortune 500 firm. The supply chain formerly was known as "logistics" and often was the place where the less-than-competent were placed after
having failed in other positions. That situation has changed in todays environment, however, as businesses seek to find increasing numbers of ways to operate with greater internal efficiency and
with an eye toward corporate social responsibility. The Day I report to my manager, Susan Dayton, one responsible for labor procurement from offshore
contract manufacturers. The companys business is making and marketing home textile products, so virtually everything is manufactured in developing countries where labor costs are low.
Susan shows me my office and instructs me in how to make arrangements for various items and services such as Internet access, and introduces me to several
of the people whose offices are near mine. Ill meet the others in the department at the weekly staff meeting being held in a few minutes. The student
