and that it would not be a simple or quick war. The following paper examines events that led to the battle and the battle itself. The First Battle
of Manassas It was apparent, in July of 1861, that Northern Virginia would soon be seeing real battle and one of the most
important regions was Manassas which possessed a "critical railroad junction" (Overview of Manassas, 2007). At this particular location two railroads came together to become one. They were the Orange and
Alexandria Railroad and where they intersected was the Manassas Gap Railway (Overview of Manassas, 2007). While each of the railroads were individually owned, "The agricultural riches of the vast Shenandoah
Valley were brought to the markets of the eastern seaboard by these railroads" (Overview of Manassas, 2007). It was quickly understood that anyone
who actually owned, or had access, to these railways had power in terms of transporting troops and supplies that would go directly into the hart of Confederate land (Overview of
Manassas, 2007). "From the beginning, Beauregard placed his troops out in front of it to defend it, and McDowell sought to get around him to capture it" (Overview of Manassas,
2007). According to this author it was the center of a chess game that would continue throughout the battle of Manassas (Overview of Manassas, 2007).
