the foundation for the rights that so many Americans take very seriously and in many cases sets the nation of the United States as separate from all other nations. But,
throughout time there have also been arguments about what the amendment actually offers in terms of freedom, and arguments about restricting some of those freedoms for the sake of safety.
The following paper examines the amendment and recent controversies involving this amendment. The First Amendment The First Amendment is simply as follows: "Congress shall make no law respecting
an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and
to petition the Government for a redress of grievances" (FindLaw [2], 2007). In many respects this clearly seems to be relatively straightforward. It allows for people to believe in whatever
religion they desire. It allows people to get together in groups and peacefully petition for change. It gives people the right to essentially say whatever they desire, especially about the
government, and it allows for the press to be able to speak what it wishes. Because of this amendment people such as the Rainbow Coalition and the Ku Klux
Klan can exist in the same nation and put out their own particular beliefs. People can agree or not agree with the government and they have the right to say
what they desire. However, at the same time it is interesting to note that, "The outstanding fact about the First Amendment today is that the Supreme Court has never developed
any comprehensive theory of what that constitutional guarantee means and how it should be applied in concrete cases" (FindLaw [1], 2007). At the same time people in the nation generally
