cause. Initially, it appeared that the singer had died of a massive heart attack, caused perhaps by his considerable weight gain and the stress of his performances, which he
continued actively during the months just before he died. Others argued that the pop icon had fallen prey to the kind of vices that have claimed many artists, musicians
and actors, including the use of illegal drugs and the overuse of prescription drugs. Now more than 20 years after the death of Elvis, fans and historians have attempted
to recount the years leading up to his death to determine the influences that may have taken hold and shaped the physical demise of "The King." When Elvis
was found dead in the bathroom of his home at Graceland, he was only 42 years old, but his physical condition had deteriorated significantly over the previous 4 years.
Both reporters and fans had noted that Elviss physical condition had weakened in the years following his divorce from Priscilla Presley (1974), and critics had argued that the once svelte
and vibrant musician had essentially become a fat old man. Considerable weight fluctuations that some say were a result of his use of diet pills, would mark early assessments
of the causative factors that determined the singers death. The late 1950s and 1960s marked the most significant and valued portion of Elvis career, and in 1969, Elvis had his
last major musical single. But while Elviss "concert" presence had diminished significantly in the latter part of the 1960s, the singer had "rediscovered" a niche for himself in the
