They failed with Evita, the compelling work that early on starred Patti Lupone, as they turned it into an interesting movie starring Madonna; the result was certainly something that does not do justice to the musical created to depict the life of Eva Peron. And while the film Evita was only moderately successful, as have been other films to attempt the same transition, one has to wonder why film makers are fascinated with Shakespeare. Surely they must realize that this is difficult to do. Maybe it is the challenge that is so intriguing. Creative film directors seem to be in awe of turning a Shakespearean play into a movie, but thus far, few have succeeded in creating a truly good work. Hamlet is one play that has been turned into a film several times. Branaghs 1997 version is quite modern. There have been many attempts to create Shakespeares works in recent times by casting the play with well known actors; this to an extent has dampened any authenticity the work might have had. It is very difficult to do Hamlet and utilizing well known players in roles from the past is quite a distraction. Branaugh makes that mistake. Kate Winslet gives a stunning performance as Ophelia and at the time she was not as well known as she is today. However, when Charlton Heston appears one is likely to see him as a man of modernity, despite the fact that he has on many occasions played roles from the distant past. In contrast to the infamous 1948 version starring Laurence Olivier, Branaghs work falls short. The older film certainly had a great deal more authenticity as the mood was just right.
