that someone would change their mind about war based on this film can only logically be interpreted one way: that someone who dislikes war would be persuaded to see the
necessity for fighting. It makes no sense to try and prove that the film could be interpreted the other way; it simply is not a film that encourages pacifism. This
is because the motives, as well as the characters, are absolutely black and white; there are no shades of meaning or inner psychological battles. The "good guys" are good and
the "bad guys" relentlessly evil. The only doubt is whether or not Benjamin Martin will abandon his pacifist stance and fight, and that is really never in doubt; if it
were, there would be no film. In addition, The Patriot was directed by Roland Emmerich, the same man who gave audiences Independence Day and the current blockbuster 2012; he
is known for blowing up things and doing so with somewhat monotonous regularity; he is not known for in depth exploration of characters or their motivations. The New York Times
critic wrote that the film as directed by Emmerich "is a gruesome hybrid, a mix of sentimentality and brutality that suggests a Lethal Weapon movie directed by Norman Rockwell" (Mitchell).
Thats a very good, if snarky, description. That being the case, its not surprising that the English troops are particularly nasty while the American colonists are all extremely noble. The
epitome of evil is found in Colonel William Tavington (Jason Isaacs-currently serving the same purpose in the Harry Potter series where he plays Lucius Malfoy), an officer in the Dragoons.
