was the clear and obvious inspiration for the modern film Clueless which was a simple comedy and in the opinion of many, nothing more than a film for teenagers. But
at the same time it is a classic story, due to the fact it is based on Austens Emma. The following paper examines how the film is different and similar
from the book and how it is clearly successful in remaining true to the final theme of the novel. The Film Clueless and Jane Austens Emma The premise
of the novel and the film can be summed up as follows: "Written in 1816, Emma traces a classic comic arc: a misguided matchmaker, overconfident in her abilities, learns the
error of her perceptions and discovers love in the process" (Ferriss). This particular author also notes that the film version, Clueless, is a success in translating the story of Emma
into modern times in a California high school. The power of the foundation, which supports the original novel and ultimately makes the film a success, is based on the character
of Emma, or Cher in the film. Ferriss notes how "Heckerling offers a series of suggestive parallels between Austens heroine and her cinematic counterpart, Cher (Alicia Silverstone), despite their surface
differences." The themes are the same as they relate to women as they are perhaps flirtatious, involved in matchmaking and fallible (Ferriss). Interestingly enough, however, Ferriss also argues that the
