Men, there may be a character or two that has a resemblance to some of the characters in the novel, but largely, they are the creations of the screen writers.
The characters in the film are quite different and while this occurs at times, it is not the usual co-creation between screen writer and novelist. Usually, there is greater collaboration
or at least a greater understanding of the novel by the screenwriter. A student writing on this subject notes that much can be said about the character transformations that appear
in the film adaptation. That is, the " characters are younger, some have larger roles, some have smaller roles and some characters have been combined or eliminated altogether." Why is
this the case? Why did the producer make so many changes? First, it should be said that the film was adapted from a novel by P.D. James. Indeed, the book
is quite different from the film, but the basic premises are found in each. The vast differences might suggest a different title, but in reality, many concepts are taken from
the novel and so the original story author must be given credit. In any event, characterizations are very different and it is only through exploring the screen writers intent and
vision can one figure out why the changes were made. First, it should be said that the adaptation was a success. Both the author of the work and the
screenwriters won an award for best film adaptation ("Fathers of Children of Men" 16). This is no small thing. Film adaptations are not easy to write and often egos get
in the way. The novelist for example may not want something added or taken away and after all, it is the novelists story so he or she has some say
