The topic of equality has been a predominant theme throughout American history. No two documents better illustrate this theme than the "Declaration of Independence" and, a document from
a quite different point in history, "Letter from a Birmingham Jail. The "Declaration of Independence", of course, was drafted by a number of individuals. Its primary authorship, however,
is credited to Thomas Jefferson and it was drafted during the very beginning of the countrys history. "Letter from a Birmingham Jail", in contrast, was written by Martin Luther
King Jr. during the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Although these two documents are from very different points in history and authored by very different men, the common
theme of equality prevails. The U.S. Declaration of Independence signified a new era in world history. Written in 1776, this document told
the world of Americas intent to be free from Britains control. Americans were weary of laws and policies being imposed on them by Britain. Instead of reacting as
one group or another had reacted throughout history in such situations, a common-minded group of key players (one of the most prominent being Thomas Jefferson) gathered to write their objections
down on paper. Among the objections were what were termed "self evident truths". These were "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness". This one document marked a
turning point in American relations not just with Britain but with the world in general. Its underpinnings ultimately spread to encourage numerous other countries to follow similar paths and
