about what comes next. At least, for example, if they do something untoward but not terrible they will not share the same fate as a murderer or rapist. Of course,
it is not a comfort to all. In any event, the levels of hell are quite interesting. The upper parts of hell which are not so bad contain limbo-that state
where babies are not baptized for example-and go up through level five. Level six begins the lower reaches of this dismal place. In contemplating the middle of Dantes hell, one
might want to focus on Levels five and six. Level five is generally thought of as being in the upper level and six in the lower. Thus, this is the
point where things go from bad to worse. In respect to the fifth level, Dante writes: " Continuing, they reach the fifth circle, the river Styx, where the wrathful and
the sullen are punished" (Aligheri, 1996, p.65). Here, Virgil tells Dante about the importance of fortune in the world (Aligheri 65). When they reach the sixth level, the lower part
of hell is explained as being subdivided for "violence, fraud and trechery" (Aligheri, 1996, p. 109). In the fifth level, there is water. Of course, the water is not pure.
It is important to remember this is a hellish environment and reflects that aura. One might be in a dismal, darkened cave with swamp water around. The people in this
circle are often covered with mud and refuse to see the light. The sins are wrath and sullenness, something that many would not think to be a very bad indiscretion.
This is unlike the next level six, which is aligned with fire. This is quite an interesting transition, but each form reflects a different aspect of a hellish existence.
