more fascinating accounts in the Holy Bible. It occurs during Moses and the Israelites forty year journey across the desert after they have been freed by the Egyptians.
God called down a plight of fiery serpents on the people because of their murmurings about wanting to abandon Moses and return to Egypt. Many were bitten and many
died. The Israelites, shaken into reality by the serpents, knew that they were being punished for their ill words and thoughts. They went to Moses and repented, begging
him to call on Gods mercy on their behalf. Moses did so and God instructed him to construct a brazen serpent and raise it on a pole before the
people. Anyone that had been bitten would recover if they gazed on the brazen serpent. Much has been written about
the symbolism of the brazen serpent that Moses raised before the Israelites. Much has even been written about the fiery serpents themselves. Millet and Pratt (2001) speculate whether
the fiery serpent was the Saw Scale Viper, a snake that many scientists consider the worlds most dangerous snake. Millet and Pratt (2001) explain that there is a distinction
between "deadliest" and "most dangerous" in this context. Many snakes have deadly venom but by their nature they dont pose much of a threat to man. Dangerous snakes,
in contrast, not only have a deadly venom but there are many and frequent fatalities from their bite (Millet and Pratt, 2001).
The Saw Scale Viper could indeed qualify for the reputation of a "fiery serpent" not just by its coloration but also by the effects of its bite. Its coppery
