In June of 2007 one of the greatest military generals of all time passed quietly and without a great deal of public fanfare or even acknowledgement. That
general was Robin Olds. Olds career spanned World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. He was an accomplished military strategist and added much to the lives of many who
found themselves in his company. Olds retired a one-star general in 1973 but his career extended well beyond that retirement. Olds career has been said to be illustrative
of General Douglas MacArthurs observation that: "On the fields of friendly strife are sown the
seeds that on other days and on other fields will bear the fruits of victory." (Manchester, 1978, 123).
While a superintendent at West Point, MacArthur had these words carved into the columns of the athletic facility that Olds would ultimately attend. Given Olds impressive
career, it is hard to disagree with the contention that he in turn engraved MacArthurs words into his memory. MacArthur obviously
recognized that the teamwork that is critical on the football field is just as critical in military strategy. Before troops can effectively interact as a team, however, they must
be able to function independently in an efficient and productive manner. Such independence revolves around numerous factors, some of which are learned in childhood and some of which can
