The 1990 movie "The Field", written and directed by Jim Sheridan is based on a 1965 film by John B. Keane. This is a captivating story about
rural life in Ireland in the early half of the twentieth century. The movie explores the relationships between family members and others in their rural community. Emphasis is
placed, in particular, on the agrarian lifestyle and in the bond such a lifestyle forges between man and nature. The thesis can be argued that while different cultures establish
cultural distinction in society in ways that are sometimes unique to them, the unfortunate measuring stick through which distinction is enforced or, as the case may be, penalized in modern
society seems to always be money. This thesis certainly plays out in "The Field". The bond between man and nature is something
most in the cast of characters of "The Field" identify with to one degree or another. For Bull McCabe, played by Richard Harris, however, this bond is of such
an intensity it could be compared with religion or for a lesser individual than Bull McCabe, perhaps, their relationship with their God. Never-the-less, the agrarian lifestyle and focus is the
