is unlikely. There are many films where the suspect plays with the investigators and this makes for riveting film but the situation is just not typical. There are distortions in the film in terms of various things related to procedure as well as other less obvious aspects like sexism. Also, the film displays shoddy detective work. An example of this is that police focus on the protagonist as a suspect simply because her name is etched into the bullets of the murderers gun. Also, when the real suspect is found, the law is at a loss to do anything about it. In real life, the killer would have been arrested before the shootout would ever have to take place. Of course, Hollywood likes shootouts and an arrest would have been anticlimactic. A large part of the film centers around this female Rookie who is given a hard time for being female. This may or may not be a distortion. In earlier days of the NYPD, such as in the 1960s or 1970s, one would expect a woman to be given a hard time, but this film was made in the 1990s and women have come a long way since that time. Today, there are more female police officers on the force and so, Hollywood had made an attempt to portray the female officer as less than adequate. The male dominated police subculture is also apparent. In the processing of the shooting for example, while the outcome is perhaps realistic, the procedure is rather brief. This might be due to the fact that the filmmaker would not want to go through scenes of boring proceedings regarding the validity of the shooting that occurred early in the film.
