many may argue there is a greater level of equality and division of labor due to modern family roles. One perspective that is very useful in examining the family is
the feminist perspective. This is an approach to examining the family that places a significant emphasis on the harm in disadvantage that the family structure has on the lifestyle and
life quality of women (Haralambos and Holborn, 2007). It is with this critical approach that a greater understanding of the family may be
realized. Overall, the feminist perspective is highly critical of family life due to the subjugation of women and male dominance (Haralambos and Holborn, 2007; Bilton et al, 2004). Women have
a greater level of household responsibilities, and the failure of society to recognize the economic value of a housewife further undermines the role of women. When viewed in this manner,
the family can be perceived as a complex network of power relationships. This is a significant challenge to traditional views on the family, where it is often seen as a
cooperative relationship, where there are shared values and shared interests, motivated by love (Bilton et al, 2004). The view held by feminists that marriage and the family exploit the
female is not unique. This is also seen in Marxist theories, for example Zaretsky and Engels both put forward this view and a common approach found within the feminist approach
to the family is that of Marxist feminist perspectives (Haralambos and Holborn, 2007). However, in the Marxist perspective it is a family relationship itself and the way it represents capitalism
