it sometimes becomes involved with other systems such as social welfare and social justice. Even when social workers act in a capacity other than a counseling role, they will guide
families to resources in the social welfare system, or help them to retain attorneys in the area of social justice. Counseling practice may be relevant in both cases. An example
is that a counselor is helping a family whose youngest member appears to be addicted to drugs. During the time that the girl is in family counseling, she is arrested
for possession of drugs. The social worker may help the family through the ordeal and even write a note to the judge for leniency. There is certainly a cross over
as it relates to various social systems. First, what is a family system? Dr. Murray Bowen introduced this sociological concept to claim that individuals cannot be understood by themselves and
they must be looked at as a member of a family ("Family Systems Theory," 2010). Often, the family begins with a wedding. Yet, interestingly, Boroughs, Hage, Black & Newman (1992)
attribute a decline in marriage to economic variables. Further, family systems have changed over the years. Today, there are blended families and gay families, something unheard of in the past.
Also, the dual career couple is the primary family working pattern today (Elloy & Flynn, 1998). Years ago, the wives stayed home to raise the children. Family patterns have changed,
but the family system remains intact. There are multiple relationships within the family system that serves to define it such as marital discord, impairment of one of the children, or
