classic in this day and age of sarcasm. Yet, while the jokes on The Family Guy appear to be harmless, they are really indicative of a society that has in fact lost touch with family values. The theme song for the show includes references to the fact that it is hard to find good old-fashioned values and that television is ruining everything. Yet, the family is often depicted as sitting in front of the television set anyway. While ironic, it seems as if it is typical in reality. While a spoof on family life, the show is quite outrageous. Yet, truth often comes from comedy, and this is the case with the Family Guy. The show addresses controversial material. The protagonists African American ties are for example something that addresses race. Verbal and physical abuse is typical as well. In one episode, the parents criticize language used, but beat the children, albeit briefly. When the show first aired, there were topics, which were deemed too controversial to air, such as religion (Gordon, 2003). Of course, since the advent of South Park, it seems as if anything is game. This leads to an important ethical quandary. Should television shows be censored, or censor themselves, from including offensive material? What is okay to air in the name of comedy? To some extent, The Family Guy crosses the line and becomes offensive in many ways and it has little in the way of redeeming value. That is, while it makes fun of the culture, there is little love or caring at the end of the day, so nothing is included to contrast the criticized behavior.
