small talk. They discuss the issue of working and more specifically, why we work. The authors report there are different answers to the question. In the Marxist philosophy, work is
supposed to end poverty but it does not, workers work to support the state (Bernbaum and Steer, 1986). In capitalism, work is about being productive and contributing to the good
of all but it becomes an addiction to self-interests (Bernbaum and Steer, 1986). Then, there is what the authors call "a false version of American Christianity" (Bernbaum and Steer, 1986).
Religion and the sacred are separated from business and economics. The Christian manager faces many challenges related to this concept. There is a natural human tendency in the Western
world to do well, get promoted, earn more money and gain more status. But those are temporal goals. There isnt anything wrong with those goals in and of themselves. The
issue is whether or not they have to do with Gods plan for us. From a biblical standpoint, work is ordained by God but because of the fall of
