certainly couldnt match her in terms of her phenomenal military power. Romes great armies were, in fact, all powerful. These armies were composed of thousands of fighting men,
fighting men that were led by some of the greatest military strategists of all times. They swept across the countryside conquering one group of people after another. As
the conquests of the Roman Empire grew so did her population and land area. Almost in the blink of an eye, however, the great Roman Empire was taken to
its knees (Heather xi). Her once great armies "vanished like shadows" (Heather xi). By the commonly accepted date of 476 A.D. the Roman Empire, as it was in
the height of its glory, was no more. Discussion
There are many theories as to why the Roman Empire collapsed. One theory is that the division into the Eastern Empire and the Western Empire
was the reason behind Romes fall. This theory suggests that the Empire weakened at the hands of the two leaders that took the separate parts of the Empire and
diverted resources accordingly. Others however, contend that the fall of the Roman Empire actually was more of a decline than a fall. This theory suggests that this decline
